Sight Words
Sight words, word wall words, Dolch words, high frequency words... all of these terms are essentially interchangeable. So what are they? These words help build a foundation to beginning reading. Many of these words can not be "sounded out" and need to be learned by memorization, or "sight". These words are the most frequently used words that need to be recognized to achieve reading fluency. While sight word mastery is important, remember it is just one component of building strong Foundational Skills in reading.
Each child will work on mastery of these words as his/her own pace. Each week students will be assessed on the 20 words on his/her list. After all 20 words can be read without pausing for longer than a few seconds, they will move to the next list.
Once students have mastered reading all the word lists, they will move on to learn proficient spelling of the words. Students working on spelling will have 10 words each week.
When practicing sight words it is important to mix up the words, and continuously review older words as well. The goal is for the student to master each word individually- not just memorize a list in order. I hope you find the resources on this page helpful in working with your child to master these words!
